The Health Coordinator is responsible for the monitoring of Head Start/Early Head Start health services and systems for children, families, and pregnant women of Head Start / Early Head Start programs to ensure the provision of high quality services and support. The Health Coordinator reports to the Health and Nutrition Manager and works with the management team. The Health Coordinator shares the responsibility for communicating with parents as it relates to healthy practices.

 

As a front line representative of Save the Children, the Health Coordinator is required to ensure the safety and security of Head Start children and families that he/she comes in contact with adhering to the agency’s values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.

As a Save the Children employee who will come into contact with children on a routine basis, you are expected to prevent child abuse in every situation by striving, through mental awareness, good practice and training to minimize risk to children. You must take positive steps to protect children who may be a subject of concern and report and respond to any instance of child abuse and promote training and awareness around all child safeguarding obligations.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

 

  • Coordinates the health and nutrition services content area and ensures fidelity to the health/nutrition service requirements of the Head Start Program Performance Standards, other applicable State and federal regulations, and agency policies.
  • Supports health screenings processes for children intended for early detection of developmental delays. 
  • Communicates regularly with parents, as needed, regarding their child’s medical and dental exams.
  • In coordination with the Family Service Coordinators:
    • Assists parents in selecting options for medical and dental homes, and other community health providers
    • Assists families in arranging follow-up care for their children
    • Follows-up with families in a timely, as needed
  • Assists the inventory control process for health services supplies, working with the program staff and the finance officer to procure needed supplies
  • Distribute supplies and monitor classrooms
  • Ensures classrooms/socialization rooms are adequately stocked, the environment is sanitary and safe.
  • Monitors and maintains up-to-date health records and record-keeping systems, completing all required health reports.
  • Ensures confidentiality of records, using the highest degree of discretion with sensitive information.
  • Collaborates with the Education team to develop plans for activities and strategize on program development and implementation.
  • Works closely with the Manager of Health/Nutrition to develop and implement a health education program for staff and parents, and families.
  • Builds strong partnerships within the health community and remains knowledgeable about community health resources.
  • Supports educational staff in embedding health as a basic part of all educational curricula for both children and families.
  • Attends case coordination meetings to monitor full integration of services; attends home visits, parent conferences and/or health meetings, as needed.
  • Performs regular site visits to conduct observations and provide training, technical assistance, coaching, and mentoring by working with staff, families, and community partners.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, CNA/LPN, Early Childhood Development, Social Work, or Adult Learning; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum two years’ work experience in a position that directly relates to the provision and management of Health and Family services for young children and their families following the Head Start Health program procedures, policies and standards.
  • Basic Microsoft office software capabilities.  
  • General knowledge of program management, planning, reporting, budgeting, administration, purchasing systems management, health/personnel management, and public relations.
  • Knowledge of facilities, transportation, technology and food service management.
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and as part of a team, and exercise professional judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff, children, families, and outside agencies.
  • Effective communication, problem solving, organizational, and time management skills.

 

Clear criminal records check (including child abuse registry check if required by state regulations) and pass all state and local health requirements required post job offer and prior to employment. To drive agency vehicles (if applicable), must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Save the Children Head Start insurance carrier and have a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to Save the Children Head Start. Current and former Head Start/Early Head Start parents will receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified.
